Trial (MRFIT) demonstrated significant correlation between ischemic stroke and serum
cholesterol levels (13, 14). Thus, the findings of these large statin trials raise the interesting
question of how statins could reduce ischemic stroke when ischemic stroke and cholesterol
are unrelated. It appears likely that some of the beneficial effects of statins in ischemic stroke
are attributable to the pleiotropic effects of statins on endothelial function and fibrinolytic
pathways.
