Background Statin drugs (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors)
reduce the level of cholesterol by inhibiting the synthesis of mevalonate, an intermediary in
the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway. Use of statin drugs has been associated with a variety
