Plasmodium falciparum merozoites invade erythrocytes using a range of alternative ligands
that includes erythrocyte binding antigenic proteins (EBAs) and reticulocyte binding protein
homologues (Rh). Variation in the expression of some of these genes among culture-
adapted parasite lines correlates with the use of different erythrocyte receptors. Here,
