Abstract
Describes the creation of a scale for rating autistic children, based on direct behavioral observation. The CARS has been used to rate 537 children in a statewide program over a 10-yr period. It consists of 15 scales listed along with a description of the rationale used in their inclusion. Internal consistency of the scale was found to be. 94, and an interrater reliability of. 71 was obtained by 2 observers rating 280 cases. CARS scores correlated. 84 with an overall clinical rating of psychosis indicating acceptable validity. The categories of individuals that result from the scales' use are compared, and the operational definition of autism reflected by the CARS is compared to those used in other scales.(21 ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
